January 6, 2024 - Our side trip to Uraquay

As a bit of background, this trip was organized by The Vancouver Club. 18 of us will be arriving over the next couple of days. Today, we got to meet Naan, who was traveling solo.

Naan has a goal of visiting 40 countries before she turns 40 and will meet her goal very soon.

Naan suggested we take a ferry to Colonia, Uraquay, a short 1- and 15-minute ferry ride away, and that sounded like a great idea to us.

Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese. Over the years, the Portuguese and Spanish fought over this land at least 8 times, with Britain and Brazil jumping in a couple times. Today, it is part of the independent country, Uraquay. It has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Portuguese built an 800-meter-long wall (which took 47 years to make). Sometimes it kept the Spanish out, and sometimes it didn't. Not sure if Donald Trump could make it faster or better?

Almost everyone in Argentina and Uruguay drinks a herb tea called Mate. People would literally be carrying thermoses of this stuff. Of course, we had to try it.

Let's just say it's an acquired taste.

We toured through this small town for a few more hours and then returned to Argentina for dinner and a nighttime stroll.
